What is ANPR?

ANPR is an abbreviation of 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition', and is a blanket description of camera technologies that are able to read the registration plates of vehicles by using optical character recognition, converting the data into a readable, digital text formats.

ANPR is an abbreviated term which is used to describe technologies which are used for 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition', which in recent years has gradually evolved to become one of the most widespread surveillance and data collection tools across the globe.

How ANPR Works

The technology is commonly used in areas such as automated toll roads, law enforcement and private car parking, with ANPR using a specific combination of specialised hardware, software and camera technology to convert the licence plate of a moving vehicle into readable, digital data.

There are a wide array of technologies which are used with the process of capturing and reading a number plate occurring within milliseconds. Ongoing improvements in technology and the introduction of AI has improved how ANPR works but when the process is broken down, the capturing, reading and storing of registration plate data of vehicles occurs in the following four stages.

1. Image Capture

As a vehicle approaches, a specialised camera uses infrared, also known as 'IR', illumination alongside standard sensors.

This allows the camera to flash a light that reflects perfectly from the reflective coating of modern license plates on vehicles, ensuring a clear high contrast, clear image regardless of the time of day or the weather.

2. Plate Isolation

The ANPR software will then analyse the captured image to find the specific boundaries of the number plate.

The software will look for visual indicators such as geometric proportions, standard shapes and colour gradients to isolate an registration plate from the rest of the car.

3. Optical Character Recognition

Once the image of the registration plate has been isolated, character segmentation algorithms divide the plate into individual alphanumeric components.

An 'Optical Character Recognition', or OCR engine is used to identify each letter and number based on font libraries, the angle of the characters and spatial tracking, or distance from the the camera.

4. Data Processing

The alphanumeric string is saved alongside other forms of data such as the time, date and camera location.

The data is stored and may also be cross referenced or shared with other databases databases to trigger alerts, process payments or log travel history.

Applications of ANPR

ANPR technology is used with a several areas with the intention of improving public safety or to improve services.

Law Enforcement and Crime Prevention

Police forces and general law enforcement use both fixed and mobile ANPR systems to locate stolen vehicles, identify uninsured motorists or locate vehicles linked to missing persons and criminal investigations.

Traffic Flow & Environmental Control

Transport authorities use various ANPR systems to check the speed of motorists on roads to ensure that motorists are not travelling over any speed limits. ANPR systems are also used to manage congestion charging systems and emission zones, to confirm if any vehicles using specific roads meet the required environmental standards or have paid the required fees for access.

Parking Management

Car parks use ANPR technologies to eliminate the need for physical tickets, with ANPR systems being used to confirm when a vehicle enters and leaves a car park.

This allows car parking companies and operators to automatically calculate the duration in which a vehicle has been parked, with modern systems being integrated with payment kiosks or mobile apps.
